“I write because I want to find something out. I write in order to learn something that I didn’t know before I wrote it.”
(Laurel Richardson, Fields of Play: Constructing an Academic Life. Rutgers University Press, 1997)
“I write because I enjoy expressing myself, and writing forces me to think more coherently than I do when just shooting off my mouth.”
(William Safire, William Safire on Language. Times Books, 1980)

Nowadays, you can find lots of clickbait-type headlines like blogs writing for money, articles writing for money. Unknowingly we are in a social dilemma with writing. Writers are also human, they also need money for their creativity, but the main reason for writing never can be money. But lots of people think creativity also can be bought and thus writing also became a business. Have we ever tried to find out how many benefits just simple but constant writing can have? Do we even know that there are real researchers out there who have authentic proof of the benefits of writing? Most of us don’t even care about these. Here’s proof for you guys.

Dr. James W. Pennebaker, who is the current chair of the psychology department at the University of Texas, Austin, has performed research on the benefits of writing. He asked 46 normal healthy students to write about different events for 15 minutes on 4 consecutive days. The result of six months experiment showed that those students became mentally healthy than other normal students.

A study by APA showed that writing can help to relieve stress by combatting negative and intrusive thoughts.

Should we write randomly?

Yes, we should. Writing can open a lot of doors for us that we didn’t even know were there. We can take our mind off of other things by writing, it can let us express our thoughts, it can help us with our depression, it can make us more creative. Can you imagine writing even increases your networking skill which is one of the most important things in this modern world? So, let’s jump to the benefits of writing;

1.Communication:

At this point, you can understand by yourself that continuous writing habits can develop your communication skill. It can help you to communicate better because by this you give a signal to your brain and you let yourself face some daily life conversation which helps you to communicate. It can help you to communicate both orally and in writing itself.

Writing isn’t letters on paper. It’s communication. It’s memory.
― Isaac Marion

2.Creativity

What happens when we write? We let our creative side practice. Just try to write anything for several days, you’ll get to see that day by day you’re getting new ideas while writing. Writing helps us to imagine something. While writing we try to get visualization and trust me that visualization increases your creativity. Of course, everyone can’t be that patient which is why creative writing is this much on demand in recent times. When we create something our brain gets triggered and then ‘Welcome to the creative world’.

“Creativity is the brain’s invisible muscle that when used and excercised routinely, becomes better and stronger.”
― Ashley Ormon

3.Memory

It may sound silly to someone but truth is truth that writing helps you to improve your memory. The explanation is so simple, when you write about something it creates images in your brain and it helps you to remember something for so long. The more we practice writing the sharper our memory becomes.

I try to remember the things that keep me peaceful, happy, and compassionate. I constantly write notes on my phone about little discoveries I make in terms of perspective and habitual thought patterns. My memory seems to let me down, so this really helps me.

4.Mental Stress

This is one of the most important benefits of regular writing. Writing our thoughts down on paper can be the best exercise if we want to clear our minds. It really can help us to relieve some mental stress. While writing about something of ours even if it’s fiction, unknowingly we put our emotions on it and thus we free ourselves from stress and pressure. For instance, writing a simple journal every day can make us feel lighter and help us sleep better.

As per a study, people who take out time once a week to write down the good things in their lives are more optimistic and excited about their present circumstance and future.

5.Confidence

Without any doubt, writing can make you confident. Writing can expand your ideas and while writing you think about everything thoroughly. Thus, you can express yourself a lot better than normal people who don’t have the habit of writing. And don’t you think when you know how to express your thoughts or what to say after which segment just makes you a lot more confident? Writing about something makes you have some connections between ideas and self-expression and this kind of writing practice helps you to generate more established thought processes. It can help you to get done your next goal. And obviously, our achievements boost our confidence.

There are a lot more other benefits of writing. Actually, it’s not some kind of bound rules and regulations. When you start to write or you even think of making this habit, you’ll get to see the differences by yourself. Someone can just show you the way but you must walk on it by yourself.
